In the summer of 2010 I went on a six week missions trip to Trinidad & Tobago and St. Lucia, two island countries in the Caribbean, to volunteer with Living Water Community.
Established in 1975 Living Water Community is a Catholic lay community that serves the pastoral, spiritual and social needs of the people. Living Water Community has established missions in Barbados, Saba, St. Lucia and St. Eustatius.
In Trinidad I had the opportunity to volunteer at Marian House, a centre for homeless and abandoned youth; Hospice Home for the Dying, for those dying of AIDS and other illnesses; the food bank and soup kitchen.
In St. Lucia I volunteered at Living Water Community’s Bible Vacation Camp, a two-week summer camp for unsupervised or underprivileged children in Soufriere. The camp provided guided and productive recreation as well as educational activities such as sing-a longs, craft, outdoor games, spiritual and moral guidance, and educational tours to 120 children.
I asked friends and family to consider making a donation towards the underfunded camp. The total lovingly raised was $1,223.80 and went towards purchasing craft supplies, daily lunches and new furniture for camp use… everything that helped to make camp a happy experience for the children of Soufriere.
Blog posts from June to August 2010 detail the adventure.
